The Ghana Education Service (GES) on Tuesday directed regional and district directors of education across the country to ensure that all pre-tertiary schools remained open despite an ongoing strike by teachers.

A statement released by GES directed heads of senior high schools through the regional and district directors to mobilize their management teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in schools while the teachers continued with their strike.

The directive follows the decision of the leadership of four teachers’ unions in the pre-tertiary education sector to embark on a nationwide strike in response to the government’s failure to grant them a 20 percent cost of living allowance amid the current high inflation rate, increases in the price of goods and services, among others.

“Regional and district directors have been directed to ensure that all basic schools remain open, and children who report to school are closely supervised,” the statement said.

The country’s education management body urged parents to remain calm and assured them that management was closely monitoring the situation and will advise on the way forward accordingly.

Meanwhile, the GES has invited the leadership of the teacher unions to a meeting to discuss the development and the way forward.
