Federal Government Approves Inclusion Of Plumbing, Hairstyling In Basic School CurriculumThe Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced that the new basic school curriculum will be implemented starting January 2025. During a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, he emphasized that all pupils will be required to acquire at least two vocational skills
Private primary schools are also mandated to adopt this curriculum, with an updated secondary school curriculum expected by September 2025. The new curriculum includes various trades such as plumbing, tiling, hairstyling, flooring, plaster of Paris (POP) installation, and solar installation.
Mamman stated, “Our goal is for students to graduate with at least two skills, ensuring they can lead productive lives. This curriculum is based on the National Skills Framework and will be applicable to all schools in Nigeria.”
He acknowledged that while full implementation may not occur immediately in January, preparations for necessary equipment and resources are underway. The ministry plans to support teachers through training and development initiatives.
The new curriculum aims to enhance the appeal of formal education for parents and students, addressing concerns about employability post-graduation. Mamman believes that by incorporating practical skills, students will be more motivated to attend school.
Dr. Margret Lawani, Acting Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, highlighted that the vocational subjects cover a wide range of trades, including hospitality, agriculture, and digital literacy, such as IT and robotics. The introduction of these skills aims to provide students with diverse career options and enhance their future employability.
